What Makes a Good Key Result?

Your key results should be:

Measurable

A key result is quantifiable and should have an X and Y. You should be able to collect data for the key result and measure progress during the cycle.

Time Bound

A key result should have a date for the Y value. We recommend short and strict time frames for key results to help the team focus and reduce uncertainty. The date should align with your organization’s goal setting cycles.

Outcome Based

As discussed, a key result measures an outcome, not effort. A key result focuses on the objective and not the means to get to the objective.

Influenceable

Your team should be able to influence the outcome at an 80% level. If your team can’t own it, consider if the key result belongs with another team. You might need to share this objective with another team.

Representative

The key results for an objective should represent what the team needs to achieve the objective. No more, no less.

Achievable

A key result should be achievable but should require additional focus to achieve the target. If the team can achieve the key result without challenging the status quo, then the team should adjust the target.
